For added historical context, there’s a reason all the people in these photos are white, and it’s because if you were trans and white in the 50s you could maybe get some sliver of acceptance, if you also assimilated into the dominant norms for your gender. Christine Jorgensen got her own show (briefly, before she was later hounded in the press); Lucy Hicks Anderson and Jim McHarris got arrested.
